While furniture shopping in Dublin last week, hunger pains reminded me I had skipped dinner. Breaking for food was a must, but I didn’t have time for an hour-long meal (most Sawmill Road stores close by 9 p.m. sharp). So I hurried over to Sonora-style taco shop Hass, whose fast-casual cred is bolstered by a traditional rotary spit and a hickory wood-fired grill. Take one look past the eatery’s backlit menu and walk-up counter, and you’ll see Hass’ food is more than fast.
While Hass is a favorite for its carne asada and al pastor tacos, I went with three Tacos Verde ($1.75 apiece) and was pleased to find the meatless offerings were anything but a menu afterthought. Crispy house-made flour tortillas are lined with smoky grilled potato, melted asadero cheese and—wait for it—cactus. Better known as nopal, this edible plant is commonplace in authentic Mexican cuisine, often even served raw. In this case, it was lightly grilled and spiced. Its flavor and texture reminded me of a tender green pepper.
As I had hoped, the tacos were fast, flavorful and, notably, well under $10. If you’re in the area, Hass is a reliable spot to stop for a quick bite, even for vegetarians, also offering an asadero quesadilla and customizable burrito.
