Brunch pick: A tale of two French toasts

I’ve been on a bit of a French toast kick lately—craving the semi-sweet, semi-sour, soft centered, crisp-edged breakfast treat. So as you prepare to make brunch plans this weekend, keep these two spots in mind for solid French toast choices. (Bonus! Each option is under $10.)

French Toast Sandwich ($9.25) at The Angry Baker: I always have trouble deciding if I want to go for breakfast (a smart five-item menu) or lunch (my classic order of barbecue tofu kale salad) at this Olde Towne East eatery. The French Toast Sandwich is where I happily ride that line. Crunchy brioche French toast that’s more sour than sweet is stuffed with sliced ham and melted Swiss cheese. Dip the sandwich in a side of maple syrup before each bite, and you’ve got a salty, savory and sweet dish. (Oh, and don’t forget to try to snag a seat on the bakery’s tiny back, brick-lined patio.)

Nutella French Toast ($9.50) at Philco: I love this little, sleek urban diner in the Short North. And they kill it with weekend brunch. While they’re breakfast tacos are a standout (filled with black beans, they are vegetarian, but you can add spicy chorizo), their French toast is perfect for those looking for an indulgent treat. Two huge slices of crisp, grilled brioche slowly turn soggy under a brown-butter banana sauce. The heat from both melt the huge helping of nutty chocolate spread sandwiched in between. No syrup is required to enjoy this dish (but it doesn’t hurt either). It’s sweet and gooey and skirts the line
