When a restaurant is named SuperChef’s, you’d expect to see costumed superheroes in masks and capes dashing heroically from the kitchen to your table. The website and storefront branding encourage that impression with big lettering, a bright red awning and large full-color photos of popular dishes. While the caped crusaders aren’t present, the same feeling of a comic book is there at new Downtown breakfast and lunch spot SuperChef’s: colorful, exaggerated and delightful.
Take, for instance, the red velvet pancakes. They’re more cake than pancake, but the stack of three heart-shaped delicacies are layered with whipped cream cheese and lightly drizzled with syrup. You can cut the deep red, fluffy stack with your fork, and surprisingly enough it’s not cloyingly sweet. This is just the tip of the iceberg: the menu also features Reese’s Cup, apple caramel and baked Alaskan banana pudding pancakes.
If that wasn’t enough, the waffles come in every flavor but plain, like cinnamon toast, sweet potato, bourbon and root beer float. The Elvis Waffle turns the King’s favorite sandwich into a hearty stack of crispy waffles. Bits of candied bacon are cooked right into the batter, and the quartered waffles are layered with peanut butter, sliced bananas and chocolate syrup. It will make your inner kid happy.
Other dishes take a broader interpretation of their original form. The SuperChef’s Eggs Benedict is less traditional benedict, more over-easy eggs served on a bowl of roasted red pepper grits. With the addition of cheese and a house-made sausage, the bowl swims with a little grease, but it packs a rich, buttery flavor with enough spicy heat to keep you digging in.
And true to form, superheroes do show up on the menu. A sandwich called The Hulk smashes its way into breakfast: eggs, American cheese, sausage and bacon sandwiched between two green waffles and drizzled with syrup. SuperChef’s lunch menu features super quesadillas (dubbed “Superdillas”) named after favorite heroes like Batman, Spider-Man and Captain America.
The rest of the lunch menu is rounded out with salads, pizza and burgers. The sweet and sour burger is topped with pulled pork in a strong sweet and sour sauce. The sauce tends to dominate the flavor, but it stands up as a fine burger, especially with a side of well-seasoned fries.
SuperChef’s Breakfast & More aims to do everything in the superlative. They don’t just serve bacon, they serve candied bacon. Not just biscuits, but cheddar biscuits. Not just grits, but roasted red pepper grits. While the menu lands at a higher price point than a normal diner, the colorful preparation and generous portions make up for that, and the weekend crowds seem to appreciate it.
The name comes from eatery owner and Columbus native Darnell Ferguson, who was dubbed “Super Chef” at the 2008 Beijing Olympics while serving Team USA. This is the second SuperChef’s location, the first opening in Louisville, Kentucky.
SuperChef’s serves breakfast and lunch 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, with most breakfast dishes being served all day.
