Summer feels so tantalizingly close, despite temperatures over the past couple of days that had me turning on my heat at home. Happily, I forgot all about the chilly temperatures while sampling a few drinks from Curio's new summer list. Most distinctive of the speakeasy's new offerings is the Poblano Escobar, a bright green drink that recalls the amazing kale-and-ginger-based Waylon Margarita (which owner Travis Owens tells me he decided to yank from the original menu because people loved it so much, they wouldn't branch out and order other drinks).
This smoky Mezcal drink gets its green hue from a base of spicy poblano peppers and lime, and a habanero agave sweetener offers another kick at the back end. It's not super fiery, but it's definitely complex. I liked it a lot.
I also had to order another of the new Mezcal drinks for the novelty of its name only: These Boots Are Made for Oaxacan (pronounced wah-ha-can, get it?) is sweeter, made with pink grapefruit juice, lime, honey, and pineapple bitters, plus a splash of fruity Cocchi Rosa. All novelty aside, this is a fabulous, well-rounded cocktail.
