The older I get, the more I really love dining rituals. Sure, it's fun to go eat at the newest hotspots, and I do that quite often. But on special days, like birthdays and anniversaries and holidays, I cherish returning to old favorites. It's about reminiscing over what you ordered the year before, what you wore, what you talked about, and marveling over how much has changed, and how much has stayed the same. And, hey, when a small business like a restaurant marks another year gone by, that's cause for celebration, too.
Last year I went on a Valentine's lunch date to Milestone 229, and so this year we returned. Going out for Valentine's lunch, by the way, is so much better than going out for Valentine's dinner. Much less crowded, much less anxiety. And Milestone is a good date spot, what with those panoramic river views and nice touches like complementary valet parking.
Since it's a holiday, we splurged on this Doughnut Bread Pudding to share for dessert. It's pretty delicious, so I suggest you do the same, even if it's not a holiday. It's torn-up cake doughnuts reconstituted in bread pudding form, drizzled in a whiskey anglaise and served with candied bacon and apple chutney.
